Lady Doak College, India (2013-15)

Stephanie Mora Hernández graduated with a major in Neuroscience and a minor in Hispanic Studies. A recipient of the Posse Foundation Full-Tuition Leadership Scholarship, she served as a summer Lab Research Assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital and as a Bone Marrow Transplant Intern at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She spent one Winter Term as a volunteer in El Salvador where she shadowed a local health promoter for the rural community and has served as an intern for Teach for America. She was a Village Assistant and is Co-Chair of La Alianza Latina. A Kendal at Oberlin volunteer, Stephanie loves to dance and was a member of the Koreo Hip-Hop Dance Troupe and OC Senior Gift Committee. She was excited to volunteer at LDC and looked forward to sharing her interests with the community in Madurai. Stephanie served as the Returned Fellow at Oberlin during the 2015-2016 schoolyear.

It’s been exactly 43 days since I left my home in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Although I know I just spent 21 months of my life there, it eerily feels like I never left my Chicago home in the first place. Yes, my parents’ faces show a few more wrinkles and grey hairs than before.

In early October, I was invited to join the third-year English students on a five-day excursion to Bangalore and Goa. It was roughly a month since I had settled my belongings in the Shansi apartment at Lady Doak I jumped at any opportunity to see more of the country that I would call home for the next two years.
