Shanxi Agricultural University, China (2013-15)

Xenna Goh majored in East Asian Studies and a minor in Geology. For her EAS honors project she conducted research on the Chinese National Parks initiative to find a correlation between re-emerging attitudes towards nature and new waves of ecotourism. Xenna was a 2011 recipient of a Shansi In-Asia study grant to engage in a part heritage, part agricultural project in Sichuan province. The grant enabled her to visit family members and work alongside Yi farmers on a sheep ranch. She was the Forward Captain on the OC Women’s Rugby Team, a Student Librarian Assistant in the Oberlin Science Library, and a Geographic Information Systems Assistant in the Geology Department. She speaks Chinese, Swedish, and French, and is interested in rock-climbing and backpacking! Xenna was excited to develop a deeper understanding of rural China, to be a bridge between Oberlin and SXAU, and to continue her development as a teacher.

Xenna Goh ‘13, Taigu Fellow

On August 25, 2013 I arrived in Taigu sweating and dusty after a long day of travel from Hong Kong. I rushed inside a clearly marked “Foreign Expert Apartment No. 11” to use the bathroom and was greeted by an old member of the house, framed in glass waiting for me perched on the rusting radiator: Girl on a Bike.

We were sitting in an overcrowded dumpling shop full of panicked and exhausted train passengers right outside Beijing West station waiting for an order that would most likely never come when I asked Karl, Shansi fellow to Banda Aceh, what he thought of China.
